ELIZABETH SHIRLEY (1801 – 12 Jan 1885) was born in Anderson County, South Carolina the daughter of John Shirley and Elizabeth Mitchell.
Elizabeth married Joseph R Sharp sometime in 1821 in Abbeyville, South Carolina. They lived in that region for some time where their seven children of record were all born:
- Henry W Sharp (1822 – 1905)
- Nancy Emeline Sharp (1825 – 1864)
- Richard Sharp (1827 – Unknown)
- Eady Sharp (1832 – Unknown)
- Mary Ann Sharp (1833 – 1894)
- John Sharp (1835 – Unknown)
- James C Sharp (1838 – 1870)
By 1860, Elizabeth and Joseph were living in Floyd County, Georgia. Apparently, they were able to endure the uncertainties of the the Civil War era, and remained in Floyd County where they are noted as living in 1870.
It was while living with Elizabeth and Joseph in Floyd County in 1870, that granddaughter Nancy Elizabeth Duke met and married Marcus D Lafayette Reid.
Elizabeth was living in Floyd County when Joseph died in September 1875 at age 76. After Joseph’s death, Elizabeth remained in Floyd County, living with her daughter Mary (Polly) Ann Shirley Johnston as noted in the 1880 Census. Elizabeth remained with the Johnstons until her death on 12 Jan 1885.
