JOSEPH R SHARP (1799 – Sep 1875) was born in Abbeyville, South Carolina the son of Henry Sharp and Eady Beaty Beatty.
Joseph married Elizabeth Shirley about 1821 in Abbeyville. They lived in that region for some time where their seven children of record were all born:
- Henry W Sharp (1822 – 1905)
- Nancy Emeline Sharp (1825 – 1864)
- Richard Sharp (1827 – Unknown)
- Eady Sharp (1832 – Unknown)
- Mary Ann Sharp (1833 – 1894)
- John Sharp (1835 – Unknown)
- James C Sharp (1838 – 1870)
By 1860, Joseph and Elizabeth were living in Floyd County, Georgia. Apparently, they were able to endure the uncertainties of the the Civil War era, and remained in Floyd County where they are noted as living in 1870.
It was while living with Joseph and Elizabeth in Floyd County in 1870, that granddaughter Nancy Elizabeth Duke met and married Marcus D Lafayette Reid.
Joseph continued to reside in Floyd County until his death in September 1875 at age 76.

Well, again I am delighted with your website and the hard work that you have done. I in addition to my Duke Family Heritage on my Father’s side, I am also descended from Henry W. Sharp on my Mother’s side of the family.
His daughter Martha Emma Rilla Sharp Penn was my great grandmother. Her son William Virgil Penn was Father to my Mother Agnes Millwee Penn Fowler.
I have a rather large file of Sharp info that I am willing to share if desired.
