Research findings for:  Thomas Reid, originally of Amherst County, Virginia, for the period of 1751 – 1795.  This information was extracted from various sources available at the LDS Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah.

 

26 Jun 1751     Richard Stockton, weaver, and wife Agnes to Reverend Mr. Samuel Black for 150 pounds, 400 acres both sides of Stockton Creek adjoining Joel Terrell.  Witness: Andrew Woods, James Johnston, Thomas Reid.

9 Jun 1752  John Wade and wife, Mary, to John Green for 8 pounds, 128 acres, branches of Hat Creek near Blue Mountains.  Witness: Duncan Cameron, John Reid, Thomas Reid.

10 Sep 1755  Albemarle. James Wood 350 acres on the North side of the North branch of Meechum.  Adjoining Thomas Reid, Robert Anderson, Henry Kerr, John Cowan, William Little.

8 Mar 1758 Joseph Kinkhead, to Andrew Greer for 5 schillings, 178 acres on Stockton branch of Meechum.  Witness: Thomas Reid, Hugh Alexander, James Kinkhead.  Lease for 1 year.

8 Mar 1758 Joseph Kinkhead to Andrew Greer for 40 pounds, 178 acres above, adjoining Andrew Woods, patented to David Kinkhead  5 Mar 1747, and by deed to Andrew Woods, 12 Aug 1751 and by Woods to Joseph Kinkhead.  Witness: Thomas Reid, Hugh Alexander, James Kinkhead.

10 Jun 1761  James Woods, Amherst farmer, to Samuel Woods, storekeeper for 100 pounds, 350 acres North side North branch Meechum, adjoining Thomas Reid, Robert Anderson, Henry Kerr, John Cowan, William Settles.  Witness:  William Forbes, John Depriest, Spencer Reffield.

27 Feb 1762 Samuel Mann and wife, Margaret, to Nathaniel Mann, for 7 pounds, for 31 acres on Taylor’s Creek, branch of Rockfish and part of 172 acres granted to Alexander Patton by patent 12 January 1746 and now in possession of Samuel Mann.  Lines: Archibald Woods, Samuel Mann, signed by Margaret Mann who made her mark.  Witness:  Thomas Reid, Alexander Reid, Alexander Reid, Jr., James McAlexander Jr., John Reid.

1 Mar 1762  John Woods, Albemarle and Susannah, wife, to Charles Yancey, 38 pounds for 232 acres, Rockfish River.  Lines: Archibald Woods, Col. Chiswell.  Witness:  Thomas Reid, Margaret Anderson (X), John Price, James Dunwoody, Joel Crawford.

10 Jun 1764 Alexander Reid, of Amherst, to his brother Thomas Reid, 50 pounds, 115 acres formerly conveyed by Joshua Hadley to John Reid, 1760, and since the death of said John, descended to the aforesaid Alexander as eldest son and heir-at-law of John, on north side of James River.  Delivered: Thomas Reid, 1765

14 Mar 1765 Vallentine Ball, to Geo. Kippen and Co., Glasgow merchants, 5 schillings to secure 55-1-8 half penny – land where he now lives – 540 acres , slave Lucy – to be paid by 14 Mar 1766.  Witness:  Neill Campbell, William Angus, Thomas Reid, Hugh Rose.

4 Oct 1765 Henry Maguffy to Chas. McPherson & Ninian Minzies, Henrico for 36 pounds, 200 acres head of Harris and on Tobacco Row.  Lines:  Col. Lomax  Witness: Thomas Reid, Thomas Powell, Roderick MacCullock.  (X) of Maguffy.

7 Oct 1765  Robert Whitten to Hector McAlester for 100 pounds, 263 acres both sides of Beavour Creek.  Lines:  Nicholas Easting Jr., Jer. Whitten, William Cabell’s order of Council tract:  Benjamin Stennet.  (X) of Whitten.  Witness:  William Henry, Thomas Reid.  Wife of Whitten consents.

20 Jun 1766 James Warren to McPherson and Minzies, Henrico merchants, 5 schillings to secure debt of 15-5-1 both sides of Stoney Creek, 205 acres.  Lines:  Charles Christian, William Dillard, and piece of land of Col. John Chiswell whereon John Warren now lives and land whereon James Warren now lives.  (X) of JW.  Witness:  Thomas Reid, Gabriel Penn, William Penn.

30 Jul 1766  James Bush to McPherson and Minzies, Henrico, 5 schillings to secure debt of  bond as of  30 Jul 1766, of 106-16-2 half penny and principal is 53-8-1 penny farthing – 75 acres joining Thomas Parks and Henry Childress and piece of land that Peter Field Trent bought of Benjamin Stennett and same land James Bush bought of John Stinnett; also 373 acres that James Bush bought from Glover Davenport and where John Berry lives joining William Cabell Jr. and Thomas Parks; also one survey on Piney about 300 acres – bay mare, colt, 11 cattle, cow and calf, cow marked with John Stinnett’s mark and calf with his own mark.  One cow with Drury Tucker’s mark and calf with mine.  Two red “Earlings” and other stock and household goods.  Witness: Thomas Reid, Gabriel Penn, William Penn, (X) of Bush.

8 Aug 1766 Robert Whiten to McPherson and Minzies, Henrico 5 schillings to secure debt 66-6-7 half penny and principal of 33-3-3 farthings.  270 acres on Harris Creek.  Lines:  Peirce Wade, John Goodwin, Joseph Dawson, Thomas Watts.  Land Robert Whiten bought of George Carrington SR. and received in AC – also stock and land whereon James  Warren now lives.  (X) of JW  Witness:  Thomas Reid, Gabriel Penn, William Penn.

3 Sep 1766 George Seaton, to McPherson and Minzies, Henrico, 184-14-9 pence farthing, 400 acres both sides Beaver Creek, which Seaton bought of Peirce Wade.  Lines: Edward Carter, Richard Ballenger – 400 acres which Seaton bought of Jeremiah Wade.  Still head and worm and penknife – Deed of Trust to be repaid by 28 Sep 1767.  Witness:  Thomas Reid, Gabriel Penn, John Barrett.

21 Nov 1766 John Burrows, to McPherson and Minzies, Henrico, 5 schillings to secure debt for 11-2-4-3 farthings and due on 22 Oct 1766 – bay mare, other stock, and household goods.  Witness:  Gabriel Penn, Thomas Reid, John Barret.

4 Jul 1767 Perrin Giles to Wm. Parks  5 schillings  to secure him on bond to McPherson and Minzies as of due date of 1 Jul 1769 – Negro woman Sall, beds, cattle marked with a low fork in right ear and smooth crop in left; mare.  Deed of Trust.  Witness:  William Penn, Thomas Reid.

3 Aug1767 John Depriest to Robert Donalds and Co. 25 pounds, 200 acres branch of Rucker’s Run, part of larger tract pat to John Denney and which Depriest bought from Denney.  Lines:  Col. Lomax, Deed of Trust.  Witness:  William Mitchell, Charles Rose, Thomas Reid, Hector McAllestor.

4 Sep 1767 James Warren to Ichabod Camp for 37 pounds 10, 168 acres. Lines: North side Rockey Run; William Dillard.  Witness:  Thomas Reid, Gabriel Penn, William Penn, John Barret.  Mark of Warren.

4 Sep1767 John Sandidge and wife, Keziah, to James Gatewood for 120 pounds, 400 acres.  Lines:  South side Buffalo, crossing Tribulation Creek twice: Sandidge’s Spring.  Witness:  Thomas Reid, William Penn, Dudley Gatewood, Thomas Lumpkin.  (X) of Keziah.

19 Feb 1768 John Houchin to Alexander Spiers and Co, 35 pounds for 95 acres, branch of Harris Creek in Graham’s Cove and where he lives – Houchin has not obtained patent but has had survey and fees sent to Secretary’s office.  Also beds, pigs, horses, etc.  Witness George Seaton, William Penn, Thomas Reid, John Barret.

8 Apr 1768 Carter Braxton, King Wm and George Seaton to John Roach for 66 pounds, 223 acres South side and adjoining Buffalo, which Seaton lately bought of executors of Ambrose Lee, deceased and by him mortgaged to Braxton.  Lines:  Crossing Huff’s Creek.  Witness:  Col. Thomas, Joseph Cabell, William. Cabell, Jr, Thomas Reid, Thomas Wiatt, Gabriel Penn.

16 Jul 1768 Joseph Cruize and wife, Agnis, to William Gatewood Jr. for 15 pounds, 290 acres South side of Buffalo and North side Rocky Run.  Lines:  Col. Joshua Fry, deceased.  Witness:  Samuel Murphy, John Phillips, Martin Dawson (X), Thomas Reid.

16 Jul 1768  John Roach to Carter Braxton, King Wm. for 66 pounds 18, 223 acres and next to Buffalo – conveyed by Carter Braxton to John Roach 8 Apr 1768.  Deed of Trust.  Witness:  Thomas Reid, Thomas Wyatt, Gabriel Penn.

4 Aug 1768 Joseph Crews to James Rowzee for 10 pounds, 150 acres South side Buffalo.  Lines:  Moses Higginbotham, patented to Joseph Crews 25 Sep 1762.  Witness:  Thomas Reid, John Barret, John Phillips, William Penn.

7 Nov 1768 Rich. Tankersley and wife, Winnifred, to Richard Tankersley, Jr. for 5 pounds, 150 acres – location not stated.  Witness:  Thomas Reid, Hugh Rose, David Crawford.

9 Mar 1769 Job Carter, Sr and Anne to Thomas Reid, for 150 pounds, 406 acres where Job now lives.  Lines:  William Cabell Sr., Nathaniel Davis, Lunsford Lomax Jr. on Horsley Creek.  Also, one slave woman and tobacco.  Witness:  B. Pollard, Gabriel Penn, William Horsley, John Sale, Reuben Jordan.

1769 Order Book Alexander Reid, Executor of Thomas Reid vs George Bordingham.  Sheriff to attach any good, stock, and fodder.

1769 Order Book Job Carter & ux, Ann to Thomas Reid.  Present: Zach Taliaferro.

10 May 1769 Daniel Edmunds to Alexander Speirs, John Bowman & Co., 30 pounds paid by Thomas Reid, factor, 75 acres head branch of Huff’s creek adjoining Thomas Parks – also cattle, hogs, mare, etc.  Witness: Gabriel Penn, William Penn, John Wiatt.

25 Aug 1769 Order Book.  George Penn, Executor of will of Ambrose Lee, vs. Francis Wainwright Lee, Ambrose Campbell, Hugh Rose, Thomas Wiatt, Thomas Reid, William Mitchell, Gabriel Penn, James Gatewood, Dudley Gatewood.  Dismissed as to Ambrose Campbell, James Gatewood and Dudley Gatewood.

4 Sep 1769 Order Book.  Thomas Reid vs. William Cheek  – continued.

14 Sep 1769 Order Book.  Howard Cash, security for Lucy Carter, Executors of Charles Carter, prays more security; John Blackmore has married Lucy and made bond with Gabriel Penn and Thomas Reid. 

17 Apr 1770 Lunsford Lomax, Jr., Caroline, to Jesse Mills for 60 pounds, 297 acres branch of Rucker’s Run.  Witness:  Zach Taliaferro, Thomas Mitchell, Rodney McCulloch, Thomas Reid, Richard Tankersley Sr. and Jr.

17 Apr 1770 Grymes Exectors to Thomas Wilcher for 8 pounds, 174 acres on branch of Tye.  Lines: Wilcher, Campbell, Edmonds.  Witness:  Zach Taliaferro, Rod McCuloch, Thomas Reid, Richard Tankersley Sr. and Jr.

17 Apr 1770 Payton Randolph, Benj. Grymes and John Robinson, Executors of Phillip Grymes, and Lunsford Lomax, the younger, Caroline Co., to Geo. Gillespie for 89 pounds, 875 ½ acres on Tye River.  Lines: Cartwright, Rose, Jones, sapling on a mountain, Edmonds.  Witness: Zach Taliaferro, Roderick McCulloch, Thomas Mitchell, Thomas Hawkins, Thomas Reid, Ambrose Jones.

27 Sep 1770 Thomas Reid to Peter Carter, for 80 pounds, 400 acres North side of a branch of Horsley.  Lines:  Nathaniel Davis, William Cabell, Col. Lomax.  Reid bought it of Job Carter.  Witness:  Alexander Gordon, Abraham North, Joseph Bangon, Solomon Carter.

8 Oct 1771 John Connelly to Alexander Spiers, John Bowman & Co. 78 pounds.  Witness: William Penn, Johnson Bean, Alexander Gordon, Thomas Reid.

14 Oct 1771 Duncan Cameron to Spiers and Bowman, Deed of Trust 5 schillings, land in fork of Piney River.  Lines:  Henry Rose, Nicholas Wren.  Witness:  William Lee, James Tarrant, Thomas Reid.

12 Nov 1771 Thomas Hodges to Spiers & Bowman.  Deed of Trust 5 schillings.  Wagon and stock.  Witness:  Leonard Tarrant, Phillip Smith, James Tarrant, Thomas Reid.

9 Dec 1771 Benjamin Asbury to Spiers & Bowman.  Deed of Trust 5 schillings. 175 acres on Carter’s Mill Creek.  Bought by Asbury from James Gray; also a survey of about 300 acres next to Neill Campbell and Benjamin Higginbotham; tobacco, horse, cattle, furniture.  Witness: Gabriel Penn, Wm. Camden, Addison Day, John Noel, Thomas Reid.

28 Dec 1771 Thomas Reid to Florence Mills.  Surety:  John Reid.  Witness: Joseph Miller.

29 Feb 1772 James Warren to Spiers & Bowman.  Deed of Trust 5 schillings.  99 acres on Owen’s Creek.  Bought by Warren from Thomas Bibee; cow, hogs, bed, 2 blankets, one hankerchief.  Witness: Thomas Reid, George Weir, Jesse Evans.

4 Mar 1772 John Rowzie Spiers & Bowman.  Deed of Trust 5 schillings. 100 acres where Rowzie lives.  Lines: Carter Braxton, Moses Higginbotham, John Owenby, Jr.  Also stock and furniture.  Witness:  William Mitchell, George Weir, Thomas Reid.

7 Mar 1772 Jesse Mills Spiers & Bowman.  Deed of Trust 5 schillings. Debt of 255 pounds one negro girl, Letty, about 30; one boy Harry, about 12, other slaves, stock, tobacco-land on head of Tye – 200 acres.  Witness:  George Walker, Jr; George Weir, Thomas Wright, Thomas Reid.

20 Mar 1772 John Kennady Spiers & Bowman.  Deed of Trust.  Debt of 35 pounds for 96 acres on Buffalo and three tracts belonging to Philip Penn, Matt Tucker and James Gatewood.  Also, stock and furniture, etc.  Witness:  Thomas Reid, Alexander Gordon, George Weir.

21 Mar 1772  Francis Gardiner to Spiers & Bowman.  Deed of Trust 5 schillings.  100 acres Huff Creek.  Bounded by 6 several tracts of Benjamin Stinnett, John Coleman, John Whitehead, John Ward, William Hix, Benjamin Nowell ( Norvell), stock, beds. Witness: William Lee, Thomas Reid, George Weir.

March 30, 1772  Jno. Cottrill to Spiers & Bowman.  Deed of trust – 400 acres for 5 schillings on Stovall Creek which Cottrill got by deed from Jos. Crews.  Witness:  Wm. Lee, Thos. Reid, Geo. Weir

December 4, 1772 Archibald Burden to Spiers & Bowman 27 pounds debt.  280 acres bought by Burden from Rich. Elliott.  Lines:  Wm. Wright Clemens, Rich. Davis, Carnaby Veale, Thos. Waugh, Edwd.
