REUBEN J REID (REED) (1802 – aft 1844) was born in Oglethorpe County, Georgia the son of Jacob Reid and Elizabeth (Mary) Staton.
Reuben first appears as a taxable male in 1823 in the Falling Creek Militia District of Oglethorpe County. That particular tax record also indicates that another taxable male was living with Reuben at the time the tax was taken. Reuben’s father, Jacob, is listed separately in that same tax record, and Reuben did not have any other brothers that we are aware of who would have been old enough to be subject to the poll tax (21 years of age). If the male was a relative, we suspect that it may have been one of Reuben’s brother-in-laws, either William Vaughn (Pensy) or John Ables (Nancy).
For several years that follow, Reuben appears in the poll tax record in various militia districts of Oglethorpe County, often with an additional taxable male living in the home. On each occasion, it is difficult to know who may be living in his home.
Reuben marries Tempy Williams 9 Sep 1828 in Madison County, Georgia. He appears on the tax roles of Pike County, Georgia in 1829 and then he is back again in Oglethorpe County in 1830. We are unable to track him thereafter by tax or census records.
Reuben and Tempy have at least one child of record, a son born out of wedlock prior to their marriage. Tempy brings civil action against Reuben in Oglethorpe County to compel his support of the child. We’re not certain if this action is brought prior to their marriage or at sometime thereafter following a divorce. We note that a Reuben J Reid marries a Sarah Proctor 14 Dec 1844 in Pike County, Georgia. There are no known children of record of that marriage.
