If John Sheffer died in 1773-1775 he would have been born about 1710/1720. This would have made the Jacob Reed, his son in law, born about 1740/1750. Old enough to be the father of our Jacob Reid. who stated he was born in Penn.

Blue Book of Schuylkill Co. By Mrs. —
There were 53 Battalions of the Colony of Penn. July 4, 1776 the following are of those clsoely associated with the localities of Berks and Schuylkill Co., north and south of the Blue mountains.
The fifth Battalion was led by John Patton. Col Patton was the ancestor of the Pattons, of Barry Township, Schuylkill Co., who removed from Berks Co., south of the Blue Mountains, to what was then Northumberland Co.
13 July 1776. Berks Co. Reported as having raised more than their quota of men to complete the Battalion. Ensign Jacob Read (Rieth): Drummer, William Sherman; Fifer Adam Read (Rieth);
Privates, Daniel Scheffer, Captain Michael Fohrer, Fredrich Scheffer, Daniel Read, Jonas Read, Wm Scheffer, George Emerich ( Christina Rieth, daughter of Casper) marries John Emerich) Nicholas Read, and many others I did not write down.
I have not been able to find out what happened to Jacob Read (Rieth). He is obviously the same Jacob Read that is the son in law of John Sheffer. He does tie in with the Casper Rieth family in Tulpehocken twp. Berks Co. Penn. Maria Barbara Rieth marries a Emerich in 1753. Casper Rieth marries a Schafer in 1764.. He could be the son of the George Rieth b. between 1729 and 1732 (the oldest son of Casper Rieth). I have not been able to find who George Rieth’s children are.
I do think Christopher Rieth, Sr. b. 1759, George Leonard b. 1766 and Johannes b. 1770 were sons of J. George Rieth b. 1729. It looks like my ancestor is George, son of Christopher Rieth, Sr. You can find info on a message board on ancestry.com “Reeds in Schuylkill County”.
REED connection
My family ties in with many of your surnames.
I believe my gggg grandmother Martha may be from the Rieth family.
I would appreciate any help or suggestions on how to find the real information on this family.did any of the Rieth family stop in Bucks County before going to Berks and Schuylkill?
My gggg grandfather John Middleswarth born 1745 NJ married Martha born 1750, possibly in Bucks county Pa- family file cards from early 1900’s say that Martha is possibly a Reed. I believe her name may be Rieth. John Middleswarth was seen in Tinicum Twp Bucks county in the Red Hill church in 1769 with his father.
In 1779, he is in the Revolutionary War and living in Morris County NJ.
In 1792, John and Marth and the children moved to Northumberland County Pa, which later became Union County in 1813 and then Snyder county Pa in 1855
.
John and Martha’s grandson Moses Middleswarth born c1811 married Eliza Houtz/Hautz born 1813 in Schuylkill County Pa.
Her great grandfather Philip Lorentz Hautz born 1713 came in 1729 to Pa on the friendship. In 1740, he married Eva Walborn, born 1720 in Schoharie NY, dau of Christian Walborn* and Catherina Batdorf*. Philip Lorentz hautz and Eva Walborn had daughter Anna Elizabetha married Martin Batdorf who you mention above. Philip and Eva’s son Baltzer had a son Peter Hautz that married Christina Kriegbaum who moved to Centre county abt mid 1820’s when they left Schuylkill County Pa. Christina Kriegbaum’s great grandmother was anna maria Schafer who married Mathias Gast. Peter and Christina’s son Edward Houtz born 1809 married Catherine Schaeffer*and her younger brother Andrew Shafer married Anna Hautz (daughter of Peter and christina) , Both Schafer/shafer/Schaeffer were children of Johann Schafer and Sarah Kerns.
The story of the Batdorf family is of John Jacob Peter Batdorf who with his wife and 5 daughters travels from Germany to Holland and then to London to get the ship to America but before the ship arrives, John Jacob Peter Batdorf died. His wife and 5 daughter go to America anyway. 3 of the children died on the ship or when they first arrive. They were invited to Schoharie to work in the tar and pitch plant. After 2 yrs their contract expired and NY was closing the plant. 33 families went thru the woods to the Susquehanna River – they cut up wood, and built rafts- and by raft moved themselves from Schoharie NY to Tulpehocken in 1723.
I am interested in finding information on the Rieth/Reith/Reed family that came to Tulpehocken and see if my gggg grandmother was possibly a Rieth.
She and her husband are buried in Snyder County in Adamburg Cemetery.
Their son Ner spoke German when he was a judge (when neeed) and I feel
he may have been taught by a german mother. Nothing is in the records
about Martha. Even though she was alive when the probate and orphan court records were written, she isnt mentioned. She is buried next to her first son ,who died at an early age, in the same cemetery as her husband. The only record of martha is her cemetery record and very worn tombstone.
All I have to go on is she was born 1750.
Can anyone help me with finding Martha’s parents? I am not sure that her name was really Martha – some people had her as Marth. Does anyone have a female born abt 1750 in the Rieth family that could be my gggg grandmother Martha ?
any help you can give me woud be appreciated. Also:
I see a few books written about the Reed and Rieth family in Berks County
Historical society and i would appreciate if someone could help me with the name of a good book that is written on the whole Rieth/Reith /Reed family
that is pretty accurate. and if possible where to contact to get the book
thank you

I have a question about the following entry.
Are you saying that Maria Barbara Rieth and George Gabbert were married?
I have a copy of George Gabbert’s will and his wife’s name was listed as Ann.
Ann was believed to have been Rachael’s sister.
George and Michael were Matthias’ sons.
