OBITUARY OF CHARLES RICHARD REID
Charles Richard Reid (1928 ~ 2010) entered the spirit world at 1:27 a.m. through causes incident to age, on March 9, 2010, surrounded by loving family at his home in Bountiful, Utah. Throughout the ordeal of his decline in health, he expressed devotion and gratitude to his loving companion, Patricia Pickworth Reid, who cared for him with sweetness and humor as they shared fond memories. Their marriage, July 31, 2001 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple where they served for many years, was a great blessing to each of them. Richard was born in Clinton, Utah on July 20, 1928, the second of five sons of George Samuel Reid and LaVon Holt. They endured the hardships of the Great Depression while farming and running a service station in Sunset, and were known for their integrity and love of country, freedom and family ties. Richard was the senior class president of Davis High School in 1946. He loved his service as a missionary in the Northern California Mission, and began journal keeping during these memorable years, which he continued to do throughout his life as a treasure for his posterity. His journals show the depth of his faith in God, his love for his family, his trust during times of hardship and his excitement with learning many spiritual insights during the course of his life. He was a devoted reader and student of the gospel, enjoying stimulating friendships with Hugh Nibley and other gospel scholars. He delighted in all the scriptures, sharing many insights as a parent, a teacher, and a church leader in his wards and stakes while living in Sacramento, California and Bountiful, Utah. Richard married Ila Howarth Parker on June 1, 1951 in the Logan LDS Temple, and they continued their schooling at Brigham Young University prior to moving to Sacramento for health reasons. He became a furniture and carpet salesman and later manager in Bountiful and Salt Lake City. He became involved in real estate sales, and was a civic and politically involved leader throughout his adult life. Their marriage and children were the crowning wealth of their lives; the couple had nine children, who honored their name always, and were involved in many school and church activities such as singing groups, track, violin and scholastic achievements. Richard and Ila served joyfully in the Salt Lake LDS Temple for many years. Ila passed away on October 20, 1998 from cancer. They are survived by 51 grandchildren and by their nine children and spouses: Richard and Karen Reid, David and Jill Reid, Douglas and Rochelle Reid, Kathleen and Steven E. Smoot, Rinda and David Cook, Marianne and Brent Haslam, Holli and Kelly Oram, Larraine and Nathan Moore, Juliette and Greg Meyer. He is also survived by three brothers, Paul (Colleen) of Sunset, Stephen (Pat) of Texas, and Stan (Patty) of Pleasant Grove. He was preceded in death by his older brother, Don (Bev, still living). The family is deeply grateful to Dad’s loving wife, Patricia, whose devotion has been an example to all. The family also expresses appreciation for the cherished relationships of many friends and relatives through the years.
