George Samuel Reid Family Roots

Paul Holt Reid returned to his heavenly home November 24, 2016, Thanksgiving evening, with his loving family gathered around him.

Paul was born on May 20, 1934 in Ogden, Utah the 4th son of George Samuel and LaVon Holt Reid.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Colleen Bennett and their five children, Chad (Loralee), Robyn Dickson (Nathan), Mark (Joy), Bruce (Holly), and Blake (Cathleen); eighteen grandchildren and thirty-four great grandchildren. He is also survived by his two brothers, George Stephen (Steve) and Stanford (Stan).

He was preceded in death by his parents; two older brothers, Donald (Don) and Charles Richard (Dick); grandson, James Dickson and great granddaughter, Shaylee Reid.

Paul and Colleen were married on July 15, 1954 in the Logan LDS Temple. They made their home in Sunset, Utah, and have remained there since. Paul graduated from Davis High School and then from the University of Utah with a degree in Accounting. He retired from his work in civil service at Hill Air Force Base supervising procurement of Air Force training systems parts and support services, and then continued his professional career for several years thereafter in a similar capacity at WBK Controls with his business colleague and dear friend, Arjun Bachus.

Paul was best known for his great love of God and family and for his tireless and selfless service to community and church, including his service as a Bishop, counselor in the Sunset Stake Presidency, and culminating in his service as an Ordinance Worker, Sealer and Second Counselor in the Presidency of the Ogden LDS Temple. His reverence for temple work was influenced in part by his commitment to researching the lives of his ancestors, whose legacy of faith and service he worked so diligently to carry on. Paul had a great love for all he served, and he was equally loved by those he served. Paul’s neighbors, friends and family will miss the frequent summertime visits as he and Colleen would go door to door generously sharing the produce harvested from their garden that they so skillfully tended. The streets of Roy, Sunset and Clinton will miss Paul’s attention as he would meticulously gather and dispose of litter along the various routes of his daily walks. His children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren will treasure the special memories from the annual family outings held at the Homestead and Sherwood Hills resorts, Yellowstone and Bear Lake.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at 11:00 am at the Sunset 5th Ward building, 2431 North 250 West. The family will be gathered at the 5th Ward building to greet neighbors and friends on Wednesday evening, November 30, 2016 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm and Thursday morning from 9:30 to 10:45 am.

Interment will be at the Clinton City Cemetery.

COLLEEN BENNETT REID OBITUARY

December 4, 1935 – August 6, 2022

Colleen Bennett Reid peacefully passed away on August 6, 2022, surrounded by her family. She loved her family with all her heart.

Colleen was born December 4, 1935, to Jesse and Elda Bennett. She was raised on the family farm in West Point where she learned the value of hard work and family. She grew a garden on that farm until the last few years of her life. She also had an immaculate yard and took pride in her prized flowers. Many families, neighbors, and strangers were blessed with the produce from the beloved garden at Bennett Farms or by visiting with her in her back yard which she liked to call her secret garden.

At a very young age, she fell in love with her grandmothers piano and since they lived next door, she would go over every day to play it. Her parents and grandparents purchased a piano for her which was a great financial sacrifice during the depression. She loved music almost as much as she loved her family. She touched many people through her gift at the piano and organ. She served as the ward organist for 68 years and also played on countless other occasions including a unique opportunity to play the organ at the Tabernacle on Temple Square. She played professionally for Leavitt’s Mortuary in Ogden.

She attended West Point Elementary, North Davis Jr High, and Davis High school. While at Davis High, the Student Body President, Paul Reid, caught her eye. They were married in the Logan LDS Temple on July 15, 1954. They moved to Sunset and raised their five children. She will be remembered for the love and compassion that was shown to all.

She had an elegance and grace that attracted anyone around her. She was either comforting someone, sending over a meal which included her famous hot rolls, or providing some type of service. She was always serving someone. As her own parents and Paul’s parents aged, Colleen took an active role in caretaking for them daily during their final years as they battled various health challenges.

She served in many Church responsibilities and had an unshakable faith in the gospel of Jesus Christ. She served as the Temple Matron in the Ogden LDS Temple as her husband Paul was serving in the Temple Presidency. She worked tirelessly on her family history and genealogical research. She deeply loved her ancestors. Colleen was also an exceptional leader. Her unique leadership abilities were manifest in every element of her life, from homemaking to child rearing, to community, and in numerous church responsibilities. Her gift for music was equaled by her gift to communicate. In large groups, in small groups, and especially one-on-one. She was so gifted in recognizing and drawing upon others strengths while charitably sharing those of her own.

Colleen was proceeded in death by her parents Jesse and Elda, her beloved husband Paul, a grandson James Dickson, and a great granddaughter Shaylee Reid. She looked forward to that reunion. She is survived and will greatly be missed by her five children, Chad (Loralee) Reid, Robyn (Nathan) Dickson, Mark (Joy) Reid, Bruce (Holly) Reid, Blake (Cathleen) Reid; 19 grandchildren; and 44 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Allen (Denise) Bennett; a sister Janice (Gary) Parker; brother-in-law, Steve Reid; and sister-in-law, Patty Reid. Our family would like to thank the dozens of caregivers, medical staff, ward members, neighbors, and friends who assisted mom in some way as her health declined.

The staff at Beehive Care Center in Syracuse in particular became like an extension of family to mom during her residency there. A Viewing will be held on Thursday, August 11th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and again on Friday morning from 9:45-10:45 a.m. at the Sunset 5th Ward meetinghouse at 2431 N 250 W, Sunset, Utah. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 12th at 11:00 a.m. at the same location. Interment will be at the Clinton City Cemetery.
